Pros and Cons of Living in Fort Collins in 2022

Table of Contents

One of my most popular blog posts is the one where I talked about the top pros and cons of living in Fort Collins. Well, it’s been a while since I published that post so today, I wanted to share an updated version for the Pros and Cons of Living in Fort Collins in 2022!

Without further ado, here are the top 5 pros and cons.

5 Pros of Living in Fort Collins in 2022

  1. Breweries – Fort Collins has tons of breweries, New Belgium being the king of them all. But there are plenty of others! Odell’s patio is amazing. Horse and Dragon, Funkwerks, Old Town’s Coopersmiths.
  2. Gigabit speed internet – One of the best things about living in Fort Collins is that we have municipality funded gigabit-speed internet. It will be finish being built out in 2022 and every home in Fort Collins will have the availability of Fiber Internet!
  3. Old Town Fort Collins – Old Town is the heart and soul of Fort Collins with so many amazing buildings, restaurants, parks. Disney Land is even inspired off of some of the buildings in Old Town. You’ve GOT to put Old Town Fort Collins as one of your pros!
  4. Open spaces – Another pro of living in Fort Collins is the lifestyle. There are so many open spaces, parks, bike trails, and other outdoor opportunities to spend some quality time with your loved ones. With over 280 miles of trails in Fort Collins, you can pretty much ride a new trail daily and explore this amazing town.
  5. Lifestyle – The biggest pro of living in Fort Collins in 2022 is definitely the lifestyle. We live along the foothills and have more than 300 days of sun – what more can you ask for!? Get out and hike, bike, have a picnic at the park. The lifestyle is what we are all about!

5 Cons of Living in Fort Collins in 2022

  1. Lack of NICE restaurants – There are not a lot of must-visit restaurants in Fort Collins, which is a true pity so I would definitely say this is one of the biggest cons. There are great restaurants, yes, but nothing that will have a waitlist a week or two long. One day, Fort Collins will have that.
  2. Lack of diversity – As I mentioned on a few occasions, we’re a predominantly white community but I think this is slowly but surely changing. That being said, we are open and welcoming to folks of all different backgrounds and cultures. There may be a jerk here and there that chooses to act otherwise, but I am very grateful to live in such a friendly community. It may be mostly white, but it is also mostly kind and welcoming!
  3. Poor air quality – The northwest quadrant of Fort Collins tends to have air quality issues due to oil and gas emissions coming from Weld County. Fort Collins in general also gets wind streams carrying smoke from the California and Oregon fires. I am hopeful for a clean and fire free 2022!
  4. Wildfires – Unfortunately, we’ve had several decent-sized wildfires over the past few years. Most wildfires are due to human error and touch. We’ve got to do a better job of respecting nature. Hopefully we can have another 8-year stint where we DON’T have ANY wildfires in Fort Collins.
  5. Housing prices – Just like everywhere in the country, the housing demand is high and inventory is low in Fort Collins too, which is why our housing prices are one of the biggest cons of living here. New build is having a hard time keeping up and prices don’t seem to be slowing down much.

Final Thoughts

The perfect place to live doesn’t exist, but I can tell you that Fort Collins is very close to perfection (in my opinion). There are a few cons of living here, but if you can look past them, I can assure you that you’ll enjoy our lifestyle here.
